Holding Weight introduces dimensional objects into collage and explores how physical weight changes balance, presence, and decision-making.

In this Curious Collage Society skill-building mixed media project, you’ll work with small three-dimensional elements—such as buttons, jewelry bits, or found objects—and learn how to place them with intention rather than excess. The emphasis is on choosing fewer objects, allowing space to remain open, and noticing how even a single element can anchor a composition.

Instead of decorating the surface, this project focuses on presence. You’ll observe how physical weight affects visual balance, how objects draw the eye differently than flat materials, and how restraint often creates more impact than accumulation.

You’ll explore:

  • Working with dimensional objects without overwhelming the surface

  • Balancing visual weight and actual physical weight

  • Choosing objects for meaning and presence, not decoration

  • Knowing when one object is enough

This project is paired with Everything & Nothing, whose open imagery and quieter compositions leave room for objects to exist without competition.

Designed as an experiment first and a finished piece second, Project 1071 encourages clarity, restraint, and confidence—showing how small additions can carry surprising weight.
