What Shows Through
Project 1064 focuses on painting on top of collage without losing what’s underneath.
In this Curious Collage Society skill-building mixed media project, you’ll learn how to use transparent watercolor ground to create a surface that accepts watercolor while allowing collage imagery to remain visible. This approach makes it possible to build color, atmosphere, and depth without erasing the work you’ve already done.
You’ll experiment with layering watercolor, protecting those layers correctly, and then layering again—learning how patience, sequencing, and restraint keep earlier marks intact. Rather than covering collage, this project emphasizes revealing it, using selective color and transparency to guide the eye.
This project is paired with She Who Journeys Within, whose subtle figures and symbolic imagery are especially well suited to transparent layering techniques.
What You’ll Explore
• Using transparent watercolor ground to add tooth while preserving imagery
• Painting watercolor on sealed collage surfaces
• Protecting watercolor layers so they don’t reactivate
• Enhancing select elements through restraint and selective color
How This Project Works
Designed as an experiment first and a finished piece second, Project 1064 teaches how protection, patience, and thoughtful layering can add complexity without erasure. You’ll practice slowing down, observing how each layer behaves, and deciding what deserves emphasis—and what should quietly remain beneath the surface.
This project reinforces a core Curious Collage Society value: not everything needs to be revealed at once for it to matter.
